For Those In Recovery, Here’s The Real Reason You Can Never Have Another Drink

You already know that having one drink leads to many more and that you’ll suffer to some extent regardless if you hold off after one or indulge.

This is actually because having any amount of alcohol signals our bodies to produce stimulants to counteract its depressant effects. This makes us slightly anxious after just one drink, and even more anxious after a few (especially when we’re hungover and the anesthetizing effects of the drink have worn off).

Our bodies always try to achieve homeostasis, which is like an internal balance. So when we drink, we are numbing ourselves and being dumbed down by the alcohol while our bodies try to become increasingly aware and go into fight or flight mode in response. You can’t expect to poison yourself without your body trying to do something about it. Learning about the stimulants our bodies produce makes SO much sense as to why we can never have just one drink and always want more.
